Rudi's a stick-in-the-mud German civil servant whose life is suddenly turned upside down by the sudden death of his wife, Trudi, whom he realizes all too late he never quite knew. Rudi worked hard to avoid any variance in his day, while Trudi, a not-so-closeted Japanophile who takes dance classes alone and pines for travel and adventure. Receiving a terminal diagnosis, Trudi talks Rudi into visiting their children but going to Tokyo, even to see their doted-on son Karl, is just too much for Rudi.
